KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA Women's Tennis All-Conference teams were announced Thursday, and the NSU women led the league with seven honorees. The postseason awards are voted on by the league's coaches.
Freshman
Kristina Savchenkov led the way, as she was named the MIAA Freshman of the Year. She boasted a 20-2 singles record, playing all of her matches at the second position. She also teamed with senior
Ivana Belejova to comprise the nation's No. 19-ranked doubles tandem, and they have posted a 20-3 record so far this season.
The top two teams in the league all season were Northeastern State and Southwest Baptist, and the league coaches agreed as the two schools were the only ones to pick up first-team all-conference accolades. The RiverHawks scooped up four of the six singles selections, while the Bearcats earned the other two spots and swept the three doubles teams.
Savchenkov, juniors
Houda Bellamine (20-3) and
Martina Bruzikova (21-2), and sophomore
Barbora Jirickova (20-1) were all first-team All-MIAA selections.
The doubles teams of Belejova/Savchenkov and Bellamine/
Jeanne Mallem (18-7) were both honored as second-team selections.
Belejova (11-13), Mallem (17-5) and freshman
Lucia Cerchlanova (3-1) were all named honorable mention in singles, while the doubles team of Bruzikova and Jirickova (20-5) was also named honorable mention.
Northeastern State is set to begin competition in the 2013 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. The RiverHawks have been chosen as a host site for Central Regional and they will play host to Central Oklahoma at noon April 27 at the NSU Tennis Complex.
