TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team picked up a 3-1 triumph over the University of Nebraska Kearney Friday night at DeLoache Field.
The RiverHawks (8-2-0, 4-2-0 MIAA) outshot the Lopers (6-5-1, 1-3-1) 20-12, and the home side picked up three goals in the first 21 minutes to take the win.
NSU got on the board in the fifth minute when junior forward
Jennifer Clark found the back of the net following a nifty through-ball from freshman forward
Lindsey Latta.
Latta was on her way to a career evening, as she scored in the 18th minute what would later become her first-career game-winning marker. She found the ball at her feet uncontested at the top of the 18-yard box, and she used her opening to test the keeper. The goalie attempted a diving save, but the ball deflected off her and rolled into the net.
Three minutes later, Latta sent a high-arcing free kick into the box, and
Rachel Gleason was able to head it into goal following a deflection.
Northeastern State would not be able to claim the clean sheet, however, as Tara Knowlton scored an unassisted marker in the 83rd minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Maggie Kloza made seven saves and allowed the one goal in the winning effort. Marissa Niday took the loss for the Lopers after allowing all three goals and making five saves. Katelin Mielke played the final 7:02 in net for UNK and went untested.
NSU will remain home for its next contest, an 11 a.m. meeting Oct. 7 with Fort Hays State.
