TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated Southern Nazarene 1-0 Monday night at DeLoache Field.
With the win, the RiverHawks (13-3-0) tied the school record for most victories in a single season (1999, 2012) and have a minimum of three more matches scheduled to set the all-time mark.
Senior midfielder
Renee' Valcarcel put home the game-winning goal in the 18th minute. Sophomore defender
Emily Burch took a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side that was initially saved by SNU goalkeeper Yoli Zamarripa. The deflection found the boot of Valcarcel, who was able to finish.
Valcarcel's goal was her fifth of the season third game winner.
The two teams tied in shots at 15-15, while NSU had the advantage in corner kicks 2-1.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff (13-3) played the full 90 minutes and made five saves. Woodruff also recorded her eighth shutout of the season, which extends her school record.
"I felt like the first 20 minutes we played pretty good soccer. We created a lot of chances but couldn't put those away," NSU coach
Chase Wooten said. "We got a fluke goal on a long restart ball from (Emily) Burch and Renee' followed up just off the crossbar to put one away."
"After how well we played on Friday against UCO I felt like we just couldn't connect. We played some other people and we were sampling some things here and there. Hopefully we can find our way for the Friday match."
The RiverHawks will host MIAA opponent Emporia State at 7 p.m. November 1 at DeLoache Field for NSU's Senior Night.
