TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 17-ranked Northeastern State men's basketball team defeated No. 25 Harding University 72-66 Saturday night at the NSU Event Center Grand Opening.
Â
The RiverHawks (3-0), playing in front of a crowd of 1,757 fans, earned a crucial early-season victory against an in-region opponent, while the Bisons (1-1) suffered their first setback of the young campaign.
Â
NSU was led by senior guard
Bryton Hobbs, who posted his second career double-double with game highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds. The rebound number was a career-high, and he has now scored at least 20 points in each of the first three games of the season.
Â
Junior guard
Dalen Qualls and junior forward
Landon DeMasters joined Hobbs in double figures, as each scored 12 points.
Â
All five of Harding's starters were in double figures, led by Hayden Johnson's 13 points. Tony Cochran, Weston Jameson and Jacob Gibson all had 11 points, while Andraz Kavas added 10.
Â
Northeastern State led for the majority of the game, outside of a brief momentum prior to the final media timeout when Harding was able to tie the score at 54-54. But a pair of free throws from DeMasters and a solid finish to the game was enough to send the RiverHawks to victory.
NSU will remain home for a 7 p.m. contest Nov. 20 against Southwestern College.
