Northeastern State Drops Opener to West Texas A&M

Tate tallies career-high 18 as NSU falls 64-55 in first game of 2013-14

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team lost its season opener 64-55 to West Texas A&M Friday night inside Stubblefield Center.
 
The RiverHawks (0-1) were led by junior guard Fontana Tate's career-high 18 points, while the Lady Buffs (1-0) had three score in double figures.
 
WTAMU began the game on a 14-4 run and never trailed in the contest. The team used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take its largest lead of the game at 27-12, and the Lady Buffs entered halftime with a 30-19 advantage.
 
With the score reading 37-25 with 17:37 remaining in the contest, NSU went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to get within two, and the RiverHawks tied the game at 45-45 right before the under-8 media timeout.
 
West Texas A&M, however, would not let the green and white take a lead and used a 10-3 run late to push the lead back to double digits.
 
Casey Land paced the Lady Buffs with 21 points, while Devin Griffin added 13 and Lacee Logan chipped in 11.
 
Northeastern State will remain in Fort Smith, Ark., to meet Harding University at noon Nov. 9.
