TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated Washburn 1-0 Sunday afternoon at DeLoache Field.

The RiverHawks (6-4, 3-3 MIAA) earned their third-straight victory over the Ichabods (0-9-1, 0-5-1 MIAA) and improved to .500 in conference play.

Sophomore midfielder McKenna Jetton put the home team on the scoreboard in the 44th minute. Just before halftime, she received a pass from freshman forward Megan Griswold at the top of the 18-yard box. Jetton beat a defender and shot near left post to give the RiverHawks a 1-0 lead, which would be enough to give the victory to Northeastern State.

Jetton had the lone goal despite NSU having plenty of chances. The RiverHawks outshot Washburn 22-5. The RiverHawks also edged the Ichabods 5-0 in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff (6-4) earned her fourth clean sheet of the season and improved her school record to 14 career shutouts. She played all 90 minutes and had two saves in the shutout performance.

The goal for Jetton was the first game winner of her career. Griswold also picked up her first-career point.

Northeastern State will next travel to Hays, Kansas, to take on Fort Hays State at 7 p.m. Oct. 10.

Statement...
"I thought we played well. We had an agenda today. We knew what we wanted to do defensively and then attack out of that shape. I thought that as a collective group, cohesion-wise, we did a good job. We had a gauge of what Washburn was going to do and we wanted to make sure they didn't pull us apart with what they were doing. I thought, in general, we stuck to the game plan and we executed it. I thought we had lots of good chances. We certainly had the majority of shots-on-goal, but we just didn't take advantage of it. They had a couple of good looks, but most of that was in a counter moment. I thought we defended well, too. Overall, we split the weekend at home. We were hoping to get the Emporia State win, but from at a standpoint of being on Sunday unable to get Friday back, it's a goal achieved."

On getting better at connecting passes in the midfield…
"We're getting there. We were trying to do that as soon as we won the ball. Our mindset was as soon as the ball is turned over, can we have some form of combination. Sometimes when you have the ball for a pass or two, they end up honing in on you and locking you up. Today, we were just trying to play a lot quicker and a lot more under control. I think there are times where we look connected and other times where we're looking around and we're still a little green to each other."

On the continuing solid defensive effort…
"I think they do a good job. We had talked about maybe making some changes lately after the Friday night loss when we couldn't put a goal away. But we thought in today's environment with Washburn we'd do everything we could to keep a clean sheet. We wanted to try to limit the amount of saves we were going to have and forfeit some of the space in front of us. I think that we're a little spoiled to the level that they're playing at right now on the backline."
