NSU begins campaign with inaugural MIAA GAC Challenge

RiverHawks set to host Central Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Northwestern Oklahoma State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State men's and women's basketball teams are set to host the 2014 Stuteville Automotive Group MIAA GAC Basketball Challenge Nov. 14-15 at the NSU Event Center. The University of Central Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State will make the trip to Tahlequah to open the 2014-15 season.

The inaugural tournament will consist of eight games over two days. Host Northeastern State and UCO of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State of the Great American Conference in men's and women's doubleheaders both days.

The NSU men will play Northwestern Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and then take on Southeastern Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 15.

WHO ARE THE RIVERHAWKS?
Northeastern State University is located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and the team competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. After finishing 16-13 in 2013-14, the RiverHawks were picked to finish 12th in the MIAA. NSU lost four starters and its top four scorers. The leading returning scorer is senior forward Landon DeMasters who averaged 8.1 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game last season. The RiverHawks are led by first year head coach Jason Tinsley.
 
WHO ARE THE BRONCHOS?
The University of Central Oklahoma is located in Edmond, Oklahoma, and the team competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Bronchos finished the 2013-14 season as runner-up in the MIAA postseason tournament after posting a 20-10 record. They defeated NSU in the semifinals of the MIAA Championship. They were picked to finish sixth in the preseason MIAA poll. They return six players, including three starters. Senior Philip Brown averaged 11.0 points and 3.7 rebounds a year ago while leading the Bronchos in 3-point shooting with a 39.7 shooting percentage. Junior Cal Andrews put up 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game in the 2013-14 campaign, while fellow junior Seth Heckart posted a game average of 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds. The Bronchos are coached by Terry Evans who has a 243-114 record in 12 years at UCO.  
 
WHO ARE THE SAVAGE STORM?
Southeastern Oklahoma State University is located in Durant, Oklahoma, and the team competes in the Great American Conference. The Savage Storm posted a 9-18 record last year. They were picked to finish eighth in the preseason GAC poll. SEOSU returns three of its top five scorers from 2013-14. Senior Taylor Smaller averaged 11.9 points, while leading the team in three-pointers (62), assists per game (4.1) and steals (34) last year. Senior Darius Harris also returns after posting 8.8 points per game, recording 22 blocked shots and leading the 2013-14 Savage Storm team with 6.9 rebounds per game. Southeastern Oklahoma State University is coached by fourth-year head coach Kelly Green, and he owns a 36-47 mark.
 
WHO ARE THE RANGERS?
Northwestern Oklahoma State University is located in Alva, Oklahoma, and the team competes in the Great American Conference. They finished the 2013-14 season with a 12-14 record. The Rangers were picked 10th in the preseason GAC poll. The Rangers return three of their top five scorers from a year ago. Sophomore Adrian Motley returns after averaging 10.3 points per game and 5.7 rebounds a game last year while junior T'aries Taylor posted 9.7 ppg and had a team high 21 steals. Fellow junior Laakeem Henderson averaged 7.7 points and made a team-high 42 treys. The Rangers are coached by Andrew Brown who is in his eighth season and has posted a 110-94 record.
