Women’s basketball set for Thanksgiving Classic

NSU travels to Springfield to play Rockhurst, Drury

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team is set to play in the Doubletree Hotel/Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Drury University. The RiverHawks (2-1) will take on Rockhurst University (1-2) at 7:45 p.m. Nov. 28 before playing No. 7 Drury University (3-1) at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 29.

The RiverHawks will be meeting Rockhurst for the first time. NSU will be looking for some revenge after falling in double overtime to Drury in Tahlequah last year.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Rockhurst University is located in Kansas City, Missouri, and the team competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks have posted a 1-2 record on the young season, beating Evangel University before falling to Missouri Southern State and Missouri Western State. Rockhurst was picked to finish eighth in the preseason GLVC West Division poll. Mary Dineen (12.7 ppg) and Lauren Meyers (10.7 ppg) are the leading scorers, and Jill Myers (6.0 rpg) leads the squad in rebounding. The Hawks are averaging 57.7 points per game and shooting .370 as a team.
 
SCOUTING THE LADY PANTHERS
Drury University is located in Springfield, Missouri, and the team competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Lady Panthers were ranked third in the preseason USA Today/WBCA poll, and they are currently ranked No. 7 in the nation. They are 3-1 in the 2014-15 season, defeating Colorado Christian, Colorado Mesa and Southwest Baptist before falling in overtime to Washburn in their last game. They were picked to finish fifth in the preseason GLVC West Division poll. Annie Armstrong leads the way for Drury, averaging 21.0 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game. Sanayika Shields, who leads the team in rebounding, averages 10.3 ppg and 11.0 rpg. The Lady Panthers average 81.0 points per game and shoot .404 as a team.
 
THE LAST TIME OUT – NSU 72, UAFS 67
The Northeastern State women's basketball team defeated Arkansas-Fort Smith 72-67 Tuesday evening inside Stubblefield Center. The RiverHawks improved to 2-1 on the season. Sophomore forward Mya Walker led all scorers with 16 points. She also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. Senior guards Chelsey Beathard (14) and Fontana Tate (12) also reached double figures. NSU shot 44 percent (22-for-50) from the field, 40.6 percent (13-for-32) from downtown and 88.2 percent (15-for-17) at the free-throw line. The RiverHawks made their first 15 free-throw attempts before missing a pair in the waning moments of the contest. The Lady Lions shot 35.8 percent (24-for-67) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-for-23) from 3-point territory and 75 percent (12-for-16) at the line. Jasmine Brainard paced UAFS with 16 points, while Candice Followwell added 10 for the home team.
 
NSU SELECTED 8TH IN MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
The Northeastern State women's basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the MIAA by the league coaches. The RiverHawks earned 83 points and are projected to finish one place higher than their ninth-place effort from a season ago. Emporia State topped the coaches' poll with 160 points total and five first-place votes. Northeastern State finished 11-17 last season and 7-12 in the MIAA. The RiverHawks return their two top scorers in senior guards Fontana Tate (11.2 ppg) and Chelsey Beathard (9.0 ppg).
 
SEASON TICKETS ON SALE
The NSU Athletics Department announced its season ticket packages for the home portion of the men's and women's basketball schedule. Adult general admission tickets can be purchased for $125, and the season chair back seats are $200. Season ticket holders receive the benefit of sitting in comfortable chair back seats. They also receive first option to purchase playoff tickets, premier seating for NSU's 24 home contests and an excellent view of the 78,200 square foot multipurpose event center. The 2014 campaign will mark the second year of the $25 single-game Family 4-pack, which includes two general admission adult tickets and two general admission student tickets (ages 4 through high school). The Family 4-Pack may be purchased at any time and used at any regular season home game.
 
TICKETS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY IN 2014-15
All fans wishing to attend an NSU home basketball contest this season will be required to show a ticket prior to entering the facilities. NSU students and faculty/staff will still be allowed free admittance, but NSU ID's will no longer be accepted as a form of entry. Tickets can be purchased at NSU's new ticketing Web site, goriverhawkstickets.com. NSU students and faculty/staff can access goriverhawkstickets.com and secure their free tickets (either printable or downloaded to your smart phone) through their goNSU accounts.
