TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northeastern State football team lost 42-7 to Washburn Saturday afternoon at Yager Stadium.

NSU coach Rob Robinson returned to the town where he had spent the past 12 years, and his RiverHawks fell to 0-10 overall and 0-10 in the MIAA. The Ichabods improved to 4-6 on the year and 4-6 in the league.

WU scored in all three phases of the game, recording touchdowns on offense (three), defense (one) and special teams (two).

The home team won the toss and started off quickly despite deferring possession to the second half. Sophomore quarterback Kevin Pantastico threw his MIAA-leading 13th interception of the season on the first play from scrimmage, and WU running back Vershon Moore scored from 14 yards out three plays later. Cody Heiman converted a two-point attempt to put Washburn on top 8-0.

NSU's first five drives ended in three plays or less, and the sixth drive lasted eight plays but ended in a missed field goal. The Northeastern State kicking game continued to struggle, as senior kicker Dylan Beers missed a 29-yard attempt that caromed off the left upright early in the second quarter. He is now 1-for-6 on FG tries this season.

The RiverHawks were able to force a Washburn punt and used great field position to march 44 yards into the endzone. Senior running back Terrance Dixon punched the ball in from four yards out to cut the deficit to 8-7.

The only glimmer of hope for the RiverHawks was quickly squashed, however, as Zach Franklin and Kameron Stewart took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score. Stewart received a handoff on a reverse from Franklin and went the final 86 yards.

Two drives later, Shay Wooten returned a Dixon fumble 23 yards for a touchdown, and NSU quickly found itself in a 21-7 hole at halftime.

Washburn added a punt block return for touchdown and two more offensive scores in the second half to complete the big victory for the home team.

The Ichabods led in total offense by a narrow 245-210 margin. They also held a 148-72 lead in rushing yards, while NSU led in passing yards 138-97. Northeastern State led in time of possession 32:44-27:16, but the RiverHawks also turned the ball over four times.

Washburn sacked NSU on six occasions, while the green and white finished with three sacks. The RiverHawks converted just 1 of 18 third-down attempts, while the Ichabods were 2-for-14.

Junior wide receiver Prince McJunkins was one of the lone bright spots on offense for NSU, as he led the green and white with 35 yards rushing that came on a fake punt late in the third quarter. Pantastico finished just 12 of 30 through the air for 138 yards and no touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Ricki Herod finished with six catches for 48 yards. Junior wide receiver Garrett Powell had a pair of receptions for 43 yards before being ejected.

NSU's final game of the season will be a home contest at 1 p.m. Nov. 15 against Lindenwood. The RiverHawks will be looking to avoid the first 0-11 season in school history, while the Lions will be searching for their second win of the campaign.

GAME NOTES
  • The victory for Washburn improves its lead in the all-time series to 4-1.
  • Northeastern State head coach Rob Robinson coached against Washburn for the first time since leaving the Ichabods, where he was a member of the coaching staff for 12 years.
  • James Renfrow made his team-leading 30th career start.
  • Kevin Pantastico threw an interception in the first quarter. He has now been picked off in eight games this season and leads the MIAA with 13 interceptions.
  • The Ichabods converted a two-point try in the first quarter. That was the first two-point conversion against the RiverHawks since Oct. 22, 2011 against Arkansas-Monticello.
  • Kameron Stewart's kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter was the first time an opponent scored off an NSU kickoff since Brandon Bryant from Southeastern Oklahoma State on Oct. 8, 2011.
  • Terrance Dixon's touchdown in the second quarter gives him 20 rushing touchdowns for his career.
  • Shay Wooten returned a Terrance Dixon fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter. This was the first fumble recovery for a touchdown against the RiverHawks since Armonty Bryant from East Central on Oct. 30, 2010.
  • Jordan Cunningham blocked a punt in the third quarter. It was his second blocked punt of the year after blocking a punt against Fort Hays State on Sept. 13, 2014.
  • The Ichabods blocked a punt and recovered it in the endzone. This was the first blocked punt for a touchdown by an NSU opponent since Sept. 15, 2012 (Washburn).
  • Vershon Moore had 136 yards rushing. The RiverHawks have given up a 100-yard rusher in five games in 2014.
  • Kevin Pantastico was sacked six times. This was a season high of sacks allowed by the RiverHawks.
  • Steffon Herd had his first-career interception in the fourth quarter. It was also just the fourth QB interception by an NSU defender this season. The RiverHawks are last in the MIAA in opponent passes intercepted.
  • Cory Meaders has thrown an interception in four of his five appearances in 2014.
  • The RiverHawks have now tied the school record for most losses in a single season. Only the 2004 (0-10) and 2008 (1-10) squads have registered as many losses. No team in school history has ever lost 11 games in a single campaign.
  • NSU held Washburn to 97 yards passing. This was the second time in 2014 that the RiverHawks defense held an opponent to less than 100 yards passing.
  • The RiverHawks gave up 245 total offense yards which was a season low.
  • Northeastern State has scored exactly 100 points this season, while the team has conceded exactly 400 points.
