TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team defeated Southwest Baptist 8-1 Friday night at DeLoache Field in a non-conference match.
The RiverHawks improved to 12-3 overall on the season, while the Bearcats dipped to 8-7 on the campaign.
Junior forward
Anastasia Robinson led the charge when she scored two goals in the first eight minutes of play. After she kicked off the scoring, her teammates followed suit as six different RiverHawks potted goals the rest of the way. Three of the goal scorers, senior
Lindsey Latta, junior
McKenna Jetton and true freshman
Alanah Martin, registered their first tallies of the season. NSU now has a school-record 16 different goal scorers this season.
Robinson, Jetton and sophomore midfielder
Alexis Carson all scored in the first half as the RiverHawks carried a season-best four-goal lead into halftime.
Senior forward
McKenzie Musella got in on the action in the 49th minute, and Latta slotted her tally home in the 62nd minute. Martin capped off the scoring with the first goal of her NSU career in the 73rd minute off assists from Jetton and sophomore forward
Madison Dobbs.
The Bearcats would break the shutout with a goal of their own from Brooke Herald in the 81st minute, but they would get no closer.
The eight goals were the third-most scored in a single match in school history and were the most for NSU since Sept. 10, 2011.
Junior goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff (12-3) played the first 50 minutes in net and was forced to make just one save in the winning effort. She was relieved of her duties by redshirt freshman
Meg Smith, who played the rest of the match in net and conceded SBU's lone goal.
Kaitlin Webb (1-5) made seven saves and allowed eight goals for the visitors.
Northeastern State outshot Southwest Baptist 24-14 and led 6-2 in corner kicks.
Martin, junior midfielder
Jennifer Cudjoe and sophomore midfielder
Julia Mathis all finished with two assists. Mathis now has nine helpers this season, which is good for third-most in a single season in school history.
Robinson scored her 10th and 11th goals of the campaign. Both her goal total and point total (28) this season are sixth-most in a single season in school history.
Northeastern State will carry a two-match win streak over regionally-ranked teams into its next match when Missouri Southern State comes to town. The RiverHawks and Lions are scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at DeLoache Field.

NORTHEASTERN STATE COACH CHASE WOOTENOpening statement…"I thought tonight we were able to take advantage of the space they gave us and we were able to put away our chances early. They were super dangerous on a counter attack and multiples times in the first half we had even numbers defensively which isn't what we want. I think we were lucky to get to halftime (on top) by putting away our chances and weathering their counter attacks. In the second half we made some good adjustments to try to neutralize that. Certainly (Southwest Baptist is) a good team and they have some injuries they're trying to push through. In the big picture of it all I thought for what the objectives were for tonight we did a good job."
On having six different players score goals…"I think we have some good players that miss out on some minutes. It kind of depends on things as the game plays out. When we got to four and five (goals) we had a pretty good cushion there and we could try to spell some legs going into Sunday. That just creates some opportunities for players and it's up to them to make the most of it. I thought tonight, for the first time in a couple of games, we had subs that came in and helped. I think in the last couple of games we've had subs that came in and we just had to manage the game. Now they're giving us a spark."
