RiverHawks win on last-second tip-in

Strange scores with 0.6 seconds left to lift NSU to 59-58 victory over SEOSU

ALVA, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team scored with less than a second to play to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday night inside Percefull Fieldhouse.
 
The RiverHawks improved to 2-0 on the season and won the 2015 MIAA/GAC Basketball Challenge. The Savage Storm fell to 0-2 on the young campaign.
 
Sophomore guard Alexis Hill and senior forward Danielle Robertson led NSU with 10 points each. Junior transfer Mary Jane Buschmann registered nine points, five rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes. Sophomore forward Destiny Strange tallied six points, including the game-winning put-back with 0.6 seconds remaining in the game.
 
Northeastern State shot 38.6 percent (22-for-57) overall, 27.6 percent (8-for-29) from behind the arc and 87.5 percent (7-for-8) at the charity stripe. SEOSU shot 39.6 percent (19-for-48) from the field, 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from behind the 3-point line and 90.9 percent (10-for-11) at the free-throw line.
 
Olivia Potter paced the Savage Storm with 15 points. Rachel Wallace added 12, while Kaylie Baxter scored 10.
 
NSU's bench outscored the Savage Storm's 25-16.
 
The close battle saw 14 lead changes and eight ties. SEOSU initially held a 20-17 lead after the first quarter of play, but NSU held the Savage Storm to just four second-quarter points to take a 26-24 halftime lead.
 
Northeastern State stretched its lead out to eight early in the second half, but the advantage was quickly relinquished and NSU led by just two after three quarters.
 
The RiverHawks led by five with 1:52 to play, but a pair of Potter triples gave Southeastern Oklahoma State a 58-57 lead with less than a minute remaining.
 
NSU missed a jumper on its first try to win the game but was able to recover the rebound. Strange's game-winning score came on a second-straight offensive rebound.
 
Northeastern State will now prepare for its home opener, which will be against Bacone College at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 inside the NSU Event Center.
