Baseball gets first conference win

NSU defeats NWMSU in game one, trails in darkness-suspended second game

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team earned their first conference victory over Northwest Missouri State Thursday afternoon at Rousey Field. They trail in game two of the double header, which was suspended due to darkness after the seventh inning.

The RiverHawks (5-1), who are off to their best start to a season since 2001, won the first game 4-1. They trail Northwest Missouri State (2-6) 9-5 in the second game.

Senior Preston Cash recorded the only extra-base hits in the first game. He finished 2-for-3 with a double and homerun.

NSU and Northwest Missouri State will pick up the suspended game at 11 a.m. Feb. 20. The two teams will then play the scheduled doubleheader to complete the series.

NORTHEASTERN STATE 4, NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 1
The RiverHawks plated a run in the third inning and then doubled their lead in the fourth inning when Cash hit a solo homerun.

The Bearcats got a run back in the top of the fifth inning on a fielder's choice.

Cash recorded his second RBI of the day hitting a double to center field which scored junior Jamie Graeser and pushed the NSU lead back to 3-1 in the sixth inning. The RiverHawks added an additional insurance run in the inning when junior Gabriel Wurth drew an RBI walk.

Sophomore Ryan Helsley (2-0) threw 5.0 innings and conceded one run on four hits. He struck out six and walked four. Senior Clay Debban threw 0.1 innings in relief, striking out one and not giving up a hit. Senior Hayden Walch gave up one hit in 0.2 innings. Sophomore Jake Kern was on the mound for the final inning and earned his second save of the year. He gave up one hit in 1.0 innings of work.
