RiverHawks set to host Nebraska-Kearney

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State men's basketball team is set to host the University of Nebraska-Kearney in MIAA play. The RiverHawks (6-18, 4-13 MIAA) will meet the Lopers (16-8, 11-6 MIAA) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the NSU Event Center.

Nebraska-Kearney holds a slim 3-2 series lead over NSU since the RiverHawks joined the NCAA in 1996-97. The two teams first met in the NCAA Elite Eight on March 26, 2003, with NSU winning 94-75 en route to winning the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship. The two teams split last season with each squad winning on its home court. UNK won the first meeting this year in Kearney (Jan. 15). Northeastern State was picked 12th in the preseason MIAA coaches' poll, while Nebraska-Kearney was slated seventh.

SCOUTING THE LOPERS                         
The University of Nebraska-Kearney is located in Kearney, Nebraska, and the team competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Lopers are 16-8 in the 2014-15 season and have put up an 11-6 record in MIAA play. UNK is 2-1 in its last three games, defeating Fort Hays State and Emporia State while losing to Pittsburg State. The Lopers are currently in fifth place in the MIAA standings. Connor Beranek (19.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg) leads the team in scoring. Ethan Brozek (17.7 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and Trey Lansman (11.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg) also average double-figure scoring. Brozek leads the squad in rebounding. Nebraska-Kearney averages 78.3 points per game and shoots .492 as a team.
 
THE LAST TIME OUT – UCO 63, NSU 57
Northeastern State lost 63-57 to Central Oklahoma Saturday evening inside the NSU Event Center. Demone Harrison paced NSU with 20 points. He was the only member of the team in double figures. Northeastern State shot 39.3 percent (22-for-56) from the field, 20.8 percent (5-for-24) from downtown and 72.7 percent (8-for-11) at the free-throw line. The Bronchos shot 41.3 percent (19-for-46) overall, 38.9 percent (7-for-18) from distance and 54.5 percent (18-for-33) at the charity stripe. Mahlon Jones led UCO with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Philip Brown added 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Cal Andrews contributed 13 points and eight boards.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET – UNK 83, NSU 59
Northeastern State 83-59 at Nebraska-Kearney January 15, 2015 inside the Health & Sports Center. NSU was led in scoring by Dakota Caudill, who tied his career high with 17 points. Demone Harrison added 14 points and Trey Mohair chipped in 12. The team shot 38.9 percent (21-for-54) from the field, 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from behind the 3-point line and 72.2 percent (13-for-18) at the charity stripe. UNK shot 62 percent (31-for-50) overall, 54.2 percent (13-for-24) from deep and 61.5 percent (8-for-13) at the line. Connor Beranek led all scorers with 32 points. He was 8 of 12 from downtown. Trey Lansman and Ethan Brozek both added 12 points, and 12 different Lopers scored at least two points in the contest.
 
MIAA CHAMPIONSHIP IN KC
The 2015 MIAA Men's Basketball Championship is set to take place inside Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The top 12 teams in the regular season all qualify for postseason play, with the top four earning byes to Kansas City. The first round will be contested at host sites March 2, with the fifth seed hosting No. 12, the sixth seed hosting No. 11, etc. Those four winners will join the top four seeds in KC March 5-8. Both NSU basketball programs have advanced to the MIAA Championship Quarterfinals in Kansas City in each of their first two years in the league.
 
IF THE SEASON WERE TO END TODAY
NSU is currently 4-13 in league play and sits in 13th in the MIAA standings. If the season were to end today, the RiverHawks would miss out on participating in the MIAA Championship. With a week remaining in the regular season, the RiverHawks will need to win at least one of their remaining games to earn the 12 seed and play in the first round of the tournament.

TICKETS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY IN 2014-15
All fans wishing to attend an NSU home basketball contest this season will be required to show a ticket prior to entering the facilities. NSU students and faculty/staff will still be allowed free admittance, but NSU ID's will no longer be accepted as a form of entry.
