Box ScoreCLAREMORE, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team earned its 10th victory of the season by defeating Rogers State 6-3 Wednesday afternoon at Diamond Sports Complex.
Â
This is the fastest the RiverHawks (10-4) have reached double-digit victories since 2001. The Hillcats (7-9), on the flip side, suffered their sixth-straight loss.
Â
NSU jumped on top with five quick runs in the first two innings, and the team was able to hold on for the win.
Â
Junior
Gabriel Wurth quickly upped his streak of reaching base to 14-straight games when he led off the contest with a five-pitch walk. He stole second and later scored on an infield hit from sophomore
Caleb Hill. Hill later scored when junior
Shane Bridges was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Bridges was hit three times in the game.
Â
Sophomore
Jared Aschbrenner led off the second inning with a single to left field, and he added a third run off a single from senior
Preston Cash. Junior
Eric Kirkpatrick belted a single to left center that plated both Hill and junior
Cody Begovich, and that proved to be all the scoring the RiverHawks would need.
Â
Trae BoBo cut into NSU's lead with a two-run homer in the fourth and the two teams exchanged runs in the sixth, but Rogers State was unable to do any additional damage to the scoreboard.
Â
BoBo, Caleb Kohlmeyer and Chase Knott evenly split up all six of RSU's hits.
Â
The RiverHawks had seven hits in the contest, led by two each from Cash and Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick finished with three runs batted in. Hill and Begovich both scored twice.
Â
Senior
Waylon Davis (1-1) earned the victory on the mound after conceding just two runs on four hits in the first 4.0 innings. Sophomore
Dustin Berrong only gave up one run across the next two frames, and sophomore
Zack Hammock, senior
Hayden Walch and junior
Jake Kern each tossed an inning. Kern did not give up a hit in the ninth to earn his MIAA-best sixth save of the season.
Â
Caleb Banks (1-2) took the loss on the mound for RSU after giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings. Tiegen Tieperman, Erik Estrada and Buddy Fellers all threw in relief.
Â
Northeastern State is now set to travel to St. Charles, Missouri, for a four-game MIAA series against Lindenwood. The RiverHawks and Lions were originally scheduled to meet March 13-15, but rain in the Friday forecast has pushed the series back one day. The first meeting will be at 1 p.m. March 14. There will also be a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. March 15, and the series finale will begin at 3 p.m. March 16.
