ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Northeastern State baseball team split a doubleheader with Lindenwood Sunday afternoon at Lou Brock Complex.

The RiverHawks (12-5, 7-4 MIAA) won the first game 5-2, while the Lions (7-13, 1-6 MIAA) took the second game 9-3. NSU holds a 2-1 lead in the series after winning the opener 17-10 on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet in the series finale at 3 p.m. March 16.

NORTHEASTERN STATE 5, LINDENWOOD 2
A five-run sixth inning was all NSU needed to come from behind for the second-straight game and top the Lions 5-2.

Lindenwood jumped on top with a pair of runs in the third inning. Nathan Prindle singled home Zac Perkins for the first run of the game, and Prindle later scored on a wild pitch.

The RiverHawks' comeback began when sophomore Bryce Davenport led off the fifth frame with a single. Senior Preston Cash then doubled, and Davenport cut the LWU lead in half following a fielding error. Junior Eric Kirkpatrick tied the game when his single plated Cash, and NSU was able to manufacture three more runs in the inning to take the lead for good.

The Lions hit into a double play in the sixth and left two on in the seventh as Northeastern State held on for the victory.

Sophomore Ryan Helsley (4-0) stayed perfect on the season after allowing just two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out four and walked just two. Junior Jake Kern recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to register his MIAA-leading seventh save of the season. He remains second in the nation in that category.

Kirkpatrick was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior Gabriel Wurth went 2-for-4 to help Northeastern State outhit Lindenwood 8-6.

The Lions' first three batters (Wes Degener, Prindle, Wade Rothermich) combined for five of those six hits, while the final six positions went a combined 1-for-14 at the plate.

LINDENWOOD 9, NORTHEASTERN STATE 3
The Lions picked up their first conference victory of the season by earning a 9-3 triumph in the nightcap.

A six-run third jumpstarted by a Rothermich grand slam would be all Lindenwood needed to get on the board in the series. He only went 1-for-4 on the day, but he tallied four RBI and two runs scored. Wes Degener, Michael Bibbs and Ryan Light all had two hits for a Lion squad that outhit NSU 10-6.

Geoff Hartlieb (2-2) earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. Rothermich threw the final inning and did not give up a run.

Sophomore Bobby Sehgal (2-2) suffered the loss after conceding six runs (three earned) on five hits in the first 2.2 innings. Senior Waylon Davis threw 1.1 innings of relief, and sophomore Zach Poehl tossed the final 2.0 frames.

Sophomore Caleb Hill was 2-for-2 at the plate and scored once to lead NSU. Senior Tyler Wilkins and sophomore Jared Aschbrenner also scored.

With the loss, the RiverHawks fell to 7-1 in games originally scheduled for seven innings this season.
