Baseball clinches spot in tourney with split against #16 Lions

Helsley throws six innings of one-hit ball, NSU splits doubleheader

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team split a doubleheader with No. 16 Missouri Southern State University Saturday afternoon at Rousey Field.

The RiverHawks (25-20, 17-17 MIAA) won the first game 6-0, while the Lions (34-11, 24-6 MIAA) took the second game 5-1. The two teams will complete the series in a doubleheader beginning at noon April 26.

Junior Charles Sims was 4-for-8 on the day, while sophomore Bryce Davenport finished 3-for-7. Senior Preston Cash (1-for-7), sophomore Caleb Hill (1-for-4) and sophomore Jared Aschbrenner (2-for-6) all hit home runs in the first game.

By winning one game, Northeastern State has clinched a spot in the MIAA playoffs.

NORTHEASTERN STATE 6, MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE 0
The RiverHawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sims got on with a single, and Cash hit a home run to left field to bring them both across the plate.

NSU added an additional run in the fourth inning when Hill hit a home run that barely stayed fair inside the left field pole.

The green and white pushed across three extra insurance runs in the sixth inning. Senior Jorge Ozuna doubled and junior Jamie Graeser singled to put two runners on base. Aschbrenner then hit his second home run of the season and extended the lead to 6-0.

Sophomore Ryan Helsley (7-3) earned the win for the RiverHawks, striking out 12 Lions to tie a career high. He conceded no runs on one hit in 6.0 innings of work. Jake Kern threw 1.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one walk.

MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE 5, NORTHEASTERN STATE 1
The score remained scoreless through four innings in the second game. The Lions were able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Chris Hoffman.

Missouri Southern added two runs in the seventh inning when Jesse Rall hit a two-run home run to straight-away center field. The Lions pushed across two additional runs in the eighth inning on four walks and an NSU error.

The RiverHawks got one run back in the bottom of the ninth inning. After sophomore Licio Tamburlini walked and Davenport doubled, freshman Fabio Arcelay hit a pinch-hit single through the left side to close the final gap to 5-1.

Sophomore Dustin Berrong (1-2) took the loss on the mound for the RiverHawks. He conceded one run on two hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Berrong struck out four and walked six. Sophomore Zack Hammock threw 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out two. Senior Hayden Walch threw 2.0 innings in relief. He gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits. Sophomore Zach Poehl threw a hitless ninth inning.
