Long ball sends Bronchos past Northeastern State

Central Oklahoma evens weekend series after claiming second game 3-1 over NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team lost a 3-1 decision to Central Oklahoma Friday afternoon at Rousey Field.
 
The RiverHawks fell to 18-11 on the season and 12-10 in the MIAA, while the Bronchos improved to 13-18 on the campaign and 8-13 in the league.
 
UCO used two stellar pitching performances and a pair of late solo home runs from Isaac Hellbusch and Tyler Hatcher to clip Northeastern State.
 
Dilon Argo gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when his RBI single drove in Collin Day. The RiverHawks answered in the home half of the fourth when sophomore Bryce Davenport roped a double to left field to bring around senior Tyler Wilkins.
 
Neither team scored again until Hellbusch's solo shot in the eighth. NSU put runners on base in seven of the nine innings but was only able to score once as UCO held on for the victory.
 
Central Oklahoma narrowly outhit Northeastern State 8-7 and neither squad committed an error in the field.
 
Davenport went 2-for-3 and was the only member of the green and white with multiple hits.
 
Sophomore Dustin Berrong started for the RiverHawks and gave up one run on four hits in the first 5.0 innings. He collected the no-decision and struck out five on 87 pitches. Senior Waylon Davis (2-2) gave up both solo home runs and was tagged with the loss.
 
UCO starter Andrew Davis gave up one run on just five hits in 6.0 innings. Dennis Morelli (3-3) was able to pick up the win after logging the final 3.0 frames. He did not concede a run on two hits.
 
Day led all hitters with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Hatcher went 2-for-4 and was the only other Broncho to post more than one hit.
 
The series will conclude with a doubleheader that is set to begin at noon April 4.
