Box ScoreJOPLIN, Mo. – The Northeastern State baseball team lost 8-1 to No. 15 Missouri Southern State Thursday evening at Turner Field in the first round of the 2015 MIAA Championship.

The RiverHawks (25-23), seeded No. 8 in the tournament, will need to win the next two games against the top-seeded Lions (37-11) in order to advance to the semifinals of the championship for the second-straight year.

Gabriel Wurth finished 3-for-5 and scored the lone run for Northeastern State. Senior

Sophomore Zach Hammock earned the start on the mound and only gave up one unearned run through the first 4.0 innings. Sophomore
Bobby Sehgal (3-5) suffered the loss after conceding four runs on just two hits across the next 2.0 frames. Senior
Hayden Walch logged an inning of work in relief, and sophomore
Zach Poehl threw the final frame.

For the second time in five days, MSSU pitcher Cody Hutchinson (10-0) recorded a nine-inning complete game victory over NSU. He struck out nine and walked two, while giving up eight hits.

Tee Helslel led the Lions at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort. He had two RBI and scored once on a solo home run in the seventh. Evin Natick had two RBI and scored once, and both Jon Davis and Chris Hoffman scored twice.

Game two of the series will begin at 6 p.m. May 1 in Joplin.
