EDMOND, Okla. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Central Oklahoma Thursday evening at Tom Thompson Field.
This was not only the first loss of the season for NSU, but it was also the first time the RiverHawks (4-1) have conceded a goal. The Bronchos were able to improve to 3-2 on the season with the win, but the contest did not count toward MIAA standings.
Northeastern State entered the match having only allowed four shots on goal through its first four matches and outscoring its opponents 19-0. The RiverHawks were one of just four teams in all of NCAA Division II who had yet to concede a goal this season.
The Bronchos presented a much greater challenge from the opening whistle, getting the ball into NSU territory and forcing RiverHawks defenders and junior goalkeeper
Jordan Woodruff to stay on their toes. UCO's four shots on goal in the first half of equaled the amount of shots on goal NSU had allowed through its previous eight halves.
Neither team was able to break through in the first 45 minutes, and both keepers were forced to make four first-half saves. Northeastern State led the first half shot count 7-6 and finished the match with a 13-10 shot advantage.
After the beginning of the second half, it didn't take the Bronchos long to score the first and only goal. In the 51st minute, Kentia Kokis received a long cross from a counter attack and snuck the ball past Woodruff on the right side.
The RiverHawks attempted three more shots on goal after going down but were unable to get one past Central Oklahoma's freshman goalkeeper Lexie Bates.
Junior midfielder
Jennifer Cudjoe led Northeastern State in shots on goal with two, and sophomore forward
Julia Mathis led the team in shots with three.
The RiverHawks will be back on the road in a couple of days when they face Missouri Southern State at 1 p.m. Sept.19 in Joplin, Missouri. The match will also not count towards MIAA standings.
