Northeastern State suffers first loss to Upper Iowa in school history

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon at DeLoache Field.

The RiverHawks (4-4, 1-1 MIAA) were coming off a 3-2 victory over No. 20 Lindenwood two nights ago but were unable to carry the momentum through.

In the first half, neither team saw very many opportunities at the goal. The two teams combined for only four shots on goal, and the ball spent a lot of time being battled for in the middle of the field.

Sophomore midfielder Trevor Reed saw the most action inside the box. He had three shots on goal and came close to finding the back of the net a couple of times but was ultimately thwarted. Sophomore midfielder Justin Todd was second on the team in shots on goal with two.

Upper Iowa (7-0-1, 2-0 MIAA) broke the stalemate after 73 minutes of scoreless play. In the 74th minute Joaquin Alonso put one in after a corner kick was deflected by NSU. Alonso's goal would go on to be the game-winner.

The RiverHawks outshot UIU the shots on goal match 8-4, but it wasn't enough. Sophomore goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt was very effective in goal for the Peacocks, making eight saves and allowing no goals. It was Rortvedt's third shutout win of the season.

NSU's next match will be at 7 p.m. October 1 against Harding. The match will be played at DeLoache Field in Tahlequah.
