RiverHawks win road opener Tuesday

Northeastern State continued the hot start to 2015 in 5-0 victory over Ouachita Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Northeastern State women's soccer team collected a 5-0 road win over Ouachita Baptist Tuesday afternoon at Kluck Field.

The RiverHawks (3-0) struck early and often in the match to give them the early advantage in their first road game.

Junior forward Anastasia Robinson got the scoring started for NSU in the ninth minute as she scored her second goal of the season to put the RiverHawks up 1-0. NSU's next goal came eight minutes later when sophomore forward Melissa Giles put the ball in off of a goalie stop. Giles' third goal of the season gave NSU the 2-0 lead, which the team would carry into the half.

In the 52nd minute, sophomore midfielder Julia Mathis scored her first goal of the season from six yards out off a pass from senior midfielder McKenzie Musella to put the RiverHawks up 3-0. They would then go add to the lead just over a minute later when junior midfielder Jennifer Cudjoe put in her second goal of the year off a keeper deflection.

Robinson ended the game's scoring just like she started it with a goal in the 56th minute from inside the box. Musella and sophomore forward Morgan Kent were both credited with assists on the marker. Through three games this season, Robinson has already matched her goal total from her previous two seasons combined (3).

So far this year scoring has been plentiful and spread out for Northeastern State. The team has scored a combined 16 goals with 10 different goal scorers. This is the most NSU has scored through the first three matches of a season in school history.

The RiverHawks have also shown incredible defense. Today's match was the first time any RiverHawk goalie faced a shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff (3-0) played the first 57 minutes and saw four shots on goal, making all four saves. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Meg Smith played the remaining 33 minutes and saw no shots on goal.

NSU outshot the Tigers (1-1) 32-8 overall and 16-4 in shots on goal. Northeastern State also attempted 11 corners to Ouachita Baptist's four.

The RiverHawks' next game will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 11 in Ada, Oklahoma, against East Central University.
