RiverHawks net road win Monday

Northeastern State gets past Northwest Missouri State 66-60, Buschmann drops 24 in victory

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team earned a 66-60 victory over Northwest Missouri State Monday evening inside Bearcat Arena.

The RiverHawks (5-8, 2-5 MIAA) picked up their second conference win of the season and their first on the road, while the Bearcats (2-12, 0-8 MIAA) remained winless in league play.

Junior forward Mary Jane Buschmann scored a season-high 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting. True freshmen guards Kylie Looney (12) and Cailyn Long (11) both tallied double-digit scoring efforts, while senior guard Kate Bellamy contributed 10 points of her own.

NSU connected on 42.6 percent (26-for-61) of shots from the field, 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from behind the 3-point line and 57.1 percent (4-for-7) at the free-throw stripe. NWMSU shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) overall, 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from the arc and made its only free-throw attempt of the entire game.

Both Tanya Meyer and Tember Schechinger scored 19 points for the losing side, while Schechinger added 11 rebounds for the double-double.

The RiverHawks jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first four minutes of play, and they were able to build a 26-13 advantage with 2:28 left in the first half. Northwest Missouri State finished the half on a 10-0 run to pull within 26-23 heading into the final 20 minutess.

Meyer drilled a triple at the 4:34 mark of the third quarter to put the home team on top 42-40, but that would prove to be the lone second-half lead the Bearcats would enjoy. Looney hit a 3-point shot on NSU's next possession, and the visitors never trailed again.

Northwest Missouri State outrebounded NSU 35-34 and also led in assists (15-14), blocks (5-1), points off turnovers (11-10) and bench points (13-5). Northeastern State led the way in points in the paint (26-24), second-chance points (9-2), steals (8-7) and fewer turnovers (7-13).

The RiverHawks are set to return home for the first time in the second half of the season. They will play host to Washburn at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 inside the NSU Event Center.
