EDMOND – Northeastern State's second half rally came up short in their season opener falling 70-60 to Southeastern Oklahoma in the MIAA/GAC Challenge on Friday afternoon in Edmond.

The RiverHawks (0-1) trailed as many as 17 points in the third quarter but NSU pulled back within a possession (49-47) by the start of the fourth quarter.

NSU newcomer
Rylie Torrey led the squad in her first official outing with 19 points and she went 4-for-8 from long range; the sophomore also added five rebounds.Â
Mary Jane Buschmann had her first double-double in a RiverHawks uniform with 11 rebounds and 11 points. Â
Cailyn Long was NSU's second leading scorer with 16 points and she also had five boards.

Despite the loss, the RiverHawks had the edge in shooting percentage 36.7-percent to Southeastern's 35.5-percent. Friday's difference in the box score was offensive boards and second chance points. The Savage Storm had a 13-to-8 edge on the offensive glass and they had 16 second chance points, with NSU having four in the opener.

In the second half, NSU had the overall scoring edge 37-31 over the Storm but 9-for-28 shooting in the first half and seven Southeastern treys was too much to overcome.

Southeastern (1-0) led in rebounding 45-to-38, and turned the ball three extra times to NSU with 12.  From the arc, SE shot 40-percent (12-30) to NSU's 31-percent (9-29). Rachel Wallace from Southeastern led all scorers with 22 points in the opener for both teams.Â

Destiny Strange led the RiverHawks off the bench with nine points and she also had five boards.

The RiverHawks will return back to Edmond to wrap up the MIAA/GAC Challenge on Sunday with Northwestern Oklahoma at 1 p.m.
