TAHLEQUAH – A late goal in the final 45 seconds by Lindenwood broke a scoreless match and knocked the RiverHawks out of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday night at DeLoache Field.
The match which pitted the four and five seeds against each other played evenly between both programs with neither team seeing very many clean shots.
At the half, only six total shots were taken by both squads with Lindenwood having a slight four-to-two lead on NSU.
In the second period, the RiverHawks caught a break when a LU shot at the 54-minute mark hit the post to keep the match scoreless. NSU went on the offensive in the next ten minutes with four shots on goal with two being saved and the other pair going high above the post.
Lindenwood gave themselves a chance late on a corner kick with a minute to go and the pass ended up on a touch inside the box to score the go-ahead goal.
The RiverHawks trailed on shots 11-to-8 with
Alexis Carson,
Julia Mathis, and
Sarah Rector all having two. NSU had the slight four-to-three edge on corner kicks.
Lindenwood will move on and go to the MIAA semifinals on Friday with a 10-7-1 record.
With the announcement of the third NCAA Central Region Poll before Wednesday's match, the RiverHawks have fallen out of the top-six and are now eighth. Final selections will be made on Sunday and with NSU outside of looking in their season will mostly likely end at 13-5-1.
