TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State came up short at home against Bacone 68-66 on Tuesday night at the NSU Event Center.Â
Montre' Williams led NSU with 18 points and
Karon Waller added ten in the loss.
Â
"We are just not playing very well…we have a lot of chinks in our armor so to speak," said head coach
Jason Tinsley. "You got to play hard, play tough, you got to get stops, run tough offense, and right now we are just doing any of those things and its very disappointing."
Â
"I hate it for our fans that we can't play better, I'm embarrassed by it."
Â
Northeastern State shot 36.8-percent (21-57) on the floor and connected on eight treys. Bacone shot 51-percent (25-49) while leading for the majority of the contest on NSU's floor. In rebounding, the Warriors had a 40-34 edge over the RiverHawks; Waller pulled down eight to lead both squads.  Neither team shot well from the free-throw line with Bacone missing 12-of-23, Northeastern State was 16-for-23 at the line.
Â
Late in the contest, NSU had a late opportunity to overtake the Warriors after a pair of free-throws by Waller made it a 67-66 game with 1:05 left. Bacone missed a jumper in the next possession but RiverHawks couldn't connect of a layup and a three pointer. Northeastern State fouled to extend the game with Bacone missing the second free-throw to lead by two with seven seconds left but they would pick up the rebound and be put up at the line again. Bacone missed both shots and with three seconds left the RiverHawks made attempt at a half-court shot which would sail right of the backboard to fall.
Â
Sterlton Wenner led Bacone with 13 points with two others in double figures. Tuesday's game was an exhibition contest for Bacone but counted for NSU who now falls to 2-8 this season.
Â
Northeastern State will return to MIAA play on Saturday where they will host top-ranked Northwest Missouri State at 3:30 p.m.
