RiverHawks lose to Washburn, 85-27

Northeastern State remains in playoff hunt despite loss, Long nets 10 points

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northeastern State women's basketball team lost 85-27 to Washburn Wednesday night inside Lee Arena.
 
Despite the loss, the RiverHawks (8-17, 5-14 MIAA) remain comfortably above the cut line for a spot in the MIAA Championship tournament, while the Ichabods (14-11, 10-9) jumped into a tie for fifth.
 
True freshman guard Cailyn Long led NSU with 10 points. She was the only member of the RiverHawks in double figures.
 
NSU shot 17.2 percent (10-for-58) overall, 13.8 percent (4-for-29) from behind the 3-point line and 75 percent (3-for-4) at the free-throw line. WU shot 50.8 percent (31-for-61) from the field, 50 percent (13-for-26) from deep and 71.4 percent (10-for-14) at the charity stripe.
 
Haley Pfau led all scorers with 20 points, while Jharian Bowen added 19. Alyxis Bowens contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds, while both Erin Dohnalek and Felisha Gibbs scored 10 points. Jayna Smith pulled down 10 rebounds.
 
The RiverHawks led in stelas (8-3) and fewer turnovers (10-14). Washburn led in rebounding (59-20), assists (22-5), blocks (4-0), points in the paint (28-10), points off turnovers (15-2), second-chance points (9-3), fast-break points (9-0) and bench points (33-5).
 
Next up for NSU will be the final road game of the regular season. The RiverHawks will head to Emporia, Kansas, to face off against No. 22 Emporia State at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 20 inside White Auditorium.
