Baseball collects season sweep over Hillcats

Northeastern State wins fourth straight over Rogers State, tops RSU 11-9

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team scored an 11-9 victory over Rogers State Wednesday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex.

The RiverHawks (6-3) plated six in the top of the first and stayed on top for the remainder of the contest. Eight of the nine runs scored by the Hillcats (11-3) were unearned.

NSU won its fourth straight over RSU and is now 8-3 in the last 11 meetings dating back to the 2010 campaign.

Northeastern State batted around in the first, which began when senior Eric Kirkpatrick belted a three-run homer that also plated senior Charles Sims and junior Bryce Davenport.

Rogers State pushed three across in the home half of the frame and the two teams exchanged lone tallies in the second as NSU built an early 7-4 edge.

A solo run in the fourth from the Hillcats cut the lead down to two, but the RiverHawks were able to score three in the sixth to race out to a 10-5 advantage. The highlight of the frame was a bases-loaded double from Davenport that brought around Sims, senior Gabriel Wurth and redshirt freshman Zane Takhar.

Rogers State answered with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, but the visitors were able to hold the home team at bay and secure the narrow victory.

NSU registered 13 hits, which was the second-highest total this season. Takhar and Davenport were both 3-for-5, while senior Shane Bridges added a pair of hits. Kirkpatrick had three RBI, and Sims scored three times. Takhar scored twice and drove home two.

The RiverHawks went with a staff day and used nine pitchers who all threw one inning. Senior starter Justin Burgess (1-0) was credited with his first-career victory on the mound after conceding three unearned runs on three hits. Junior Thomas Murray threw the final frame to collect his MIAA-leading fourth save of the season.

RSU tallied nine hits, led by two each from Caleb Kohlmeyer, Cesar Rodriguez, and Garrett Hall. Rodriguez and Jordan Garr both scored twice, while Hall, Ismael Orozco and Chris Miguel all had two RBI.

Caleb Banks (1-1) lasted just 0.2 innings and was tagged with the loss after starting on the mound for the home team. He conceded six runs on six hits.

NSU committed six errors in the game, which was the most since April 22, 2012.

The RiverHawks will now venture to Maryville, Missouri, for the beginning of MIAA play. Northeastern State and Northwest Missouri State will meet in a three-game series Feb. 26-28.
