Martin’s career game leads to softball split

Northeastern State triumphs over Arkansas-Monticello 8-1, falls to hosts 4-2

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Northeastern State softball team split a pair of contests on the final day of the Ronnie Hawkins Invitational at Sunny Anderson Field.

The RiverHawks (3-1) defeated Arkansas-Monticello (1-3) 8-1 in the first game of the day before falling to host Ouachita Baptist (3-0) 4-2.

The NSU triumph came on the strength of a strong pitching performance from senior Kayce Wooldridge and a career day at the plate from junior Ryan Martin. She finished 2-for-3 in the game with two 3-run home runs and seven runs batted in. The RBI total was the most by an NSU softball player in a single game since at least before the RiverHawks joined the NCAA in 1998.

Overall on the day, senior Megan Ewton, junior Madison Boyd and sophomore Jessica Boone all had three hits for Northeastern State. Ewton and Martin scored twice, and sophomore Bailey Applegate scored three times despite finishing just 0-for-1 at the plate.

Next up for the RiverHawks will be the 2016 8-State Classic Feb. 12-14 in Bentonville, Arkansas. NSU will first meet William Jewell at 1 p.m. Feb. 12.

NORTHEASTERN STATE 8, ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO 1
Martin hit 3-run home runs in both the second and fourth innings, while adding a sacrifice fly in the fifth as NSU overpowered the Cotton Blossoms for the second time in as many days. Martin's previous career high for runs batted in a single game was three, which came back in her freshman year.

Boone was 3-for-5, while Applegate drew three walks and scored each time. Ewton was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Wooldridge (2-0) threw a four-hitter and only allowed one unearned run in the winning effort. She struck out five and walked just one.

Kendra Coleman (0-2) needed 100 pitches just to get through 4.0 innings. She was tagged for six runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking three. Paisley Pratt threw one inning of relief, while Mallory McWhorter tossed the final 2.0 frames.

OUACHITA BAPTIST 4, NORTHEASTERN STATE 2
Both teams scored once in the first inning, but a 3-spot in the fifth by the home team would prove to be the difference in the final game of opening weekend for the RiverHawks.

Boyd and true freshman Kelsey Harmon both had two hits for NSU. True freshman Taryn Gray (1-1) suffered her first loss in the green and white. She allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Senior Delaney Gray threw the final 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out four.
