NSU picks up 1 win over Lindenwood Sunday

Northeastern State hangs on for 4-3 victory in Game 1 before falling 5-4 in second contest

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State softball team posted one win and one loss in a doubleheader against Lindenwood Sunday at RiverHawks Park.

The RiverHawks (15-12, 3-5 MIAA) captured the morning contest 4-3, and the Lions (6-18, 3-5 MIAA) won the afternoon battle 5-4.

Junior Madison Boyd was 4-for-8 with three runs scored to lead NSU in the two games. Senior Megan Ewton finished the day 3-for-5 overall, and true freshman Kyla Ibarra was 3-for-6.

The RiverHawks will now head to Topeka, Kansas, for a doubleheader against Washburn that is set to be contested at 1 p.m. March 15.

NORTHEASTERN STATE 4, LINDENWOOD 3
NSU was able to fend off a late charge from the Lions in the opening game of the day.

The RiverHawks scored first when sophomore Bailey Applegate touched home on a wild pitch in the third inning. She initially reached base on a four-pitch walk to lead off the frame.

Ibarra drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to plate Boyd, and true freshman Jordan Woosley registered a sacrifice fly to score Ewton and push the NSU lead to 3-0.

Both teams scored in the sixth, and Northeastern State was able to fend off a two-run seventh from the visitors in order to secure the first game by the final 4-3 margin.

Boyd was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ibarra finished 2-for-2.

Senior Kayce Wooldridge (10-4) threw a complete game to reach double-digit victories on the season. She allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits, while striking out one and walking three. She is now the MIAA leader in ERA (1.16), complete games (14) and wins.

Morgan Colvis (2-7) was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked four.

LWU outhit NSU 8-7 and was led by a pair of hits from Caitlyn Touchette. She also drove in two teammates.

LINDENWOOD 5, NORTHEASTERN STATE 4
The second game was virtually identical to the first, only in reverse. Lindenwood took the early lead and held off a late rally from the home side.

The Lions led 5-0 after five innings and looked to be in cruise control, but the RiverHawks scored two in both the sixth and seventh frames to create a moment of doubt. NSU had the bases loaded with just one out after pulling to within one run in the final frame, but the comeback was halted after Ibarra and Woosley both failed to register hits in the last two at-bats.

Boyd and Ewton had two hits each, and Ibarra and sophomore Paige Gann finished with two RBI each.

Lindenwood again outhit Northeastern State, this time by a 10-9 margin. Both teams left nine runners on base.

Madeline Bohr was 3-for-4 on the contest, and Brooklyn Sisk and Maria Tippit each recorded two hits.

True freshman Taryn Gray (4-5) last just 4.0 innings and took the loss. She conceded three runs (two earned) on six hits. Wooldridge was forced to pull double duty as she came on in relief and threw the final 3.0 frames. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Bethany Fountain (3-6) gave up four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings to collect the victory. She struck out three and walked two. Brooke Miller recorded the final two outs to pick up her first save of the season.
