MWSU breaks out brooms Saturday

Northeastern State falls 21-5 in run-rule fashion to Griffons, suffer series sweep

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State baseball team finished out its weekend MIAA series with a 21-5 run-rule loss to Missouri Western State Saturday afternoon at Rousey Field.
 
The RiverHawks (14-12, 8-8 MIAA) suffered their first series sweep of the season, while the Griffons (19-8, 11-5 MIAA) improved to 11-0 all-time against NSU.
 
Northeastern State was able to find a 4-1 lead through the first two innings, but Missouri Western State plated four runs in the third to squash NSU's momentum. The visitors went on to score in each of the final seven frames – including an eight-run eighth – to secure the run-rule victory.
 
MWSU outhit NSU 24-10. Seniors Shane Bridges and Justin Burgess, along with junior Dakota Woods, all had two hits for the RiverHawks.
 
A day after failing to register a hit, Cosimo Cannella finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Alex Heuring was 4-for-6 with five RBI, three runs scored, two home runs and one triple. He landed a double shy of hitting for the cycle.
 
Orencio Fisher, Jeremy Alvarado and Kody Matthews all had three hits. David Glaude and Matthews both hit home runs. Matthews posted three RBI and three runs, while Landon Mason scored three times.
 
NSU true freshman pitcher Zach Parish (4-1) suffered his first loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings. Junior Zach Poehl threw an inning of relief and gave up three runs on five hits. Junior Zack Hammock also lasted 1.0 inning and gave up seven runs on six hits. True freshman James Cowell tossed the eighth and conceded three runs on three hits.
 
Evan Jones (4-0) picked up the win after making to the minimum 5.0 frames. He gave up five runs on eight hits. The Griffons used three relievers the rest of the way, and they combined to give up no runs on just two hits.
 
NSU is now set to continue its midweek MIAA series with Pittsburg State. The RiverHawks won the first game 13-12 in Tahlequah on March 22. The second game of the series will be contested at 3 p.m. March 30 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
