Fort Hays State completes weekend sweep over RiverHawks

Northeastern State loses to Tigers 7-6 in series finale Sunday after holding late 6-4 lead

HAYS, Kan. – The Northeastern State baseball team lost 7-6 to Fort Hays State in the weekend MIAA series finale Sunday afternoon at Larks Park.
                                              
The RiverHawks dropped to 15-15 overall and 9-11 in the MIAA, while the Tigers improved to 16-15 on the year and 10-10 in the league. This is the second-straight weekend NSU was swept by its opponent after losing three games against Missouri Western State March 24-26.
 
Senior Cody Begovich, senior Charles Sims and redshirt freshman Zane Takhar all had two hits for Northeastern State. Begovich hit a home run and finished with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Junior Bryce Davenport went 1-for-4 with an RBI two runs scored.
 
Junior Thomas Murray (0-3) threw the first complete game by an NSU pitcher this season and suffered the loss after giving up four runs in the eighth inning. He conceded seven runs total on 13 hits, while striking out five and walking two in 8.0 innings.
 
Logan Herd started for FHSU and was pulled after 5.2 innings. He took a no-decision after allowing four runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out two. Jackson Rolfs conceded two runs on one hit in 0.2 frames. Austin Unrein (1-0) earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief duty. He did not give up a run on two hits.
 
Alex King and Nick Hammeke paced Fort Hays State with three hits each. King scored twice and Hammeke drove in two. Ty Redington went just 1-for-4 but had three RBI and hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth.
 
NSU will look to rebound from its most recent series sweep when the green and white plays host to Pittsburg State at 2 p.m. April 5 at Rousey Field.
