TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State had three players reaching double-figures but a slow start and second chance points handed Washburn a 67-55 win on Thursday night.
The RiverHawks did set a 11-year low for turnovers in a game with
Cameron Martin and
Juvon Turner both having 13 points to the lead NSU on the floor, and
Tanner Mouse chipped in 12.Â
"In the first half we took too many bad shots, contested shots, and settled for jump shots," said head coach
Jason Tinsley. "When you can make shots, bad offense can look good. When can't make shots, good offense looks bad and we're probably a combination of both."
"We are standing around too much and we got to get them moving better, that's our job as coaches to do."
Northeastern State made five buckets in the first 20 minutes, shooting 15.6-percent, with two coming from long range. Despite the lack of offensive output, NSU's defense held the Ichabods two 28 points, while forcing ten turnovers to trail by 13 at the intermission.Â
The RiverHawks played a more even second half and got within three possessions after a
Montre' Williams jumper to place the score at 41-32 with 11:53 remaining. However, NSU would came up with one second chance point in the final 20 minutes, despite out-shooting Washburn 48-percent to 46.2-percent from the field.Â
Washburn out-scored the RiverHawks 14-to-4 in second chance points, and in the paint it was a 20-to-12 edge to WU. Northeastern State was out-rebounded by 14 with 31 on Thursday night but only had four turnovers.Â
Erick Broadnax led NSU seven boards and
Montre' Williams grabbed five.
From the field, Washburn shot 43.8-percent (21-48), and Northeastern State was a season low 29.8-percent on their side of the court.Â
The Ichabods were led by Javion Blake who had a game high 20 points, with the win they climb to 11-4 and 3-3 in the MIAA; Northeastern State falls to 3-12 overall and 2-5 in the league.
NSU will continue their home stand on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. where they will host Emporia State.
