NSU women drop home contest to #2 Emporia State, 71-51

TAHLEQUAH – Cailyn Long paced the RiverHawks with 22 points but second chance points by #2 Emporia State opened the door for a 71-51 win on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Event Center.

The Lady Hornets had 22 offensive rebounds which they converted into 21 second chance points on the RiverHawks.  Northeastern State didn't have a strong shooting afternoon going 29.1-percent (16-55) from the field and they went 5-for-19 at the arc.

"We played with a more competitive effort today and there were some positives on both ends of the floor," said head coach Randy Gipson.  "We didn't make shots every good and we didn't rebound very good...we just missed some shots that we need to make."

Rylie Torrey scored 13 points and Mary Jane Buschmann added ten off the NSU bench.  Hailey Chamberlin in her first start of the season matched career totals in rebounds and blocks, the NSU sophomore pulled down ten boards, with four blocks.

"I through her (Hailey) effort was good, I think she is getting better," added Gipson.  "She is a young player who is showing grit and hard work is paying off.  I'm happy she is making positive strives."

Northeastern State grabbed 30 off the glass which was 23 less than Emporia State who shot 36.4-percent (24-66) from the field.

The RiverHawks opened the contest with five unanswered points but they went 22.2-percent from the field in the first half on 6-of-27 shooting, with half of their buckets coming from the arc.   Emporia State finished the second period on a 10-3 run on the RiverHawks to pull ahead 35-20, and they doubled NSU's rebounding total with 28 boards.  Long and Torrey led NSU with seven points, and Kylie Looney had six at the midway mark.

In the second half, NSU was only out scored by five to the Lady Hornets, and got within 12-points (42-30) in the third period on a Long layup while being fouled.   However, second chance points continued to hurt the RiverHawks, with ESU picking up 14 to NSU's four to help widen the margin.

Emporia State had three in double-figures with Kathryn Flott having a double-double, scoring 19 points, and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Saturday's win will move Emporia State to 14-2 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA; Northeastern State has dropped their third in a row and falls to 6-10 and 2-5 in league play.

Northeastern State will be off until Saturday, January 21 where they will host Central Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m.
