Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Defense carries NSU to 58-53 win at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lock down defense and rebounding carried the RiverHawks to a 58-53 road win at Lindenwood on Thursday night and snapped a six game skid.

Juvon Turner led the RiverHawks with 15 points and Tanner Mouse added 14 on the scoring side of the evening.  Braxton Williams had a game high ten rebounds with NSU winning the battle of the boards 39-to-27 over the Lions.

"Our effort was really good, I thought we had an exceptional first half, and shot the ball really well," said head coach Jason Tinsley.  "Our defense gave them (Lindenwood) a lot of problems, we made it hard for them to get good looks, and we rebounded the ball well."

The RiverHawks were limited from lone-range, going 3-for-11 at the arc but they shot 40-percent (20-50) from the field; Lindenwood shot 35.4-percent (17-48) from their side of the floor.

Overall scoring was limited throughout the night and in the second half the RiverHawks didn't score their first point until Braxton Williams hit a free-throw at the 12:25 mark.  Despite the lull, NSU held Lindenwood to only five points during that frame to lead 34-25.

Possession changed only once with the RiverHawks being out in front as many as 13 points in the first half.  The closest Lindenwood would get was with 7:07 left where the Lions closed in 38-34, but Braxton Williams hit a layup to start a seven point run by NSU.

Thursday night's 53-point effort by Lindenwood was a season low and their fewest since scoring 41 at Central Missouri last season; the Lions were led by Chandler Diekvoss who had 15 points.

NSU's 39 rebounds matched a season high that was set in an overtime loss to Northwestern Oklahoma.   The RiverHawks grabbed 14 rebounds on the offensive end and out-scored Lindenwood 12-to-3 in second chance points.

The win will send the RiverHawks to 2-3 in the MIAA and 3-10 overall, Lindenwood falls to 11-6 and 1-4 in league play.

Northeastern State will travel to Lincoln who lost 78-70 on Thursday night to Central Oklahoma; the Blue Tigers are 9-5, 2-3 in the MIAA when they face the RiverHawks.   Tip off will be at 3:30 p.m. with the game being carried live on Billy Country 96.3 FM.
