ST. CHARLES, Mo. – A goal in the opening minute of overtime by Lindenwood ended Northeastern State's hopes on Sunday of a MIAA Regular Season Championship falling 1-0.
The loss in overtime broke up a ten match winning streak by the RiverHawks dating back to a 2-0 win on Sept. 29 against the same Lindenwood squad.Â
The Lions scored the game winner on a header that was just right for NSU keeper
Ryan Davis on a pass from the far left side of the field.
Sunday's loss was NSU's first shutout since the third match of the season against No. 3 Midwestern State on Sept 7; since then, the RiverHawks have won 13 of their last 15 contests.
Northeastern State had a 10-to-9 edge on shots against the Lions (10-7-0, 5-3-0 MIAA), and had three shots on-goal.Â
Aaron Ugbah nearly put the RiverHawks ahead in 57th minute but his shot ended up hitting the post to keep the contest scoreless.
Had NSU won on Sunday, they would have shared the MIAAÂ Title with Fort Hays State.
With a 13-5 overall record at the end of the regular season Northeastern State is a near lock for the NCAA Tournament as the Central Region's top-seed. Official announcements will be released on Monday at approximately 5:30 p.m.
