The Series
This will be the first meeting since the 2011 Lone Star Conference Tournament between the former league schools. Texas Woman's knocked off the #9 RiverHawks in the tournament semifinals, 54-50, in their last contest; NSU would go on to host the NCAA South Central Regional following the loss. Northeastern State leads the overall series 10-7 over Texas Woman's, with their last win in Denton coming on Feb. 17, 2010 (66-52).
The Coaches
Fala Bullock is in her first season as head coach and was named to lead her alma mater on April 1, 2017 to replace Randy Gipson who retired after 18 years. With six years of head coaching experience, Bullock is 103-78 overall and within conference play she is 63-55. She has spent the last four seasons (2013-17) as head coach at NCAA Division II Armstrong State University, where she recorded a career mark of 60-52. In her first season at Armstrong State, she led the Pirates to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history, and reached the Sweet 16.
Bullock played for Gipson for two seasons, and was a graduate assistant under Gipson from 2004 to 2006. As student-athlete, Bullock played in 57 games and NSU went 36-19, winning the 2003 Lone Star Conference Tournament, and made the program's first NCAA Tournament berth. As a member of Gipson's coaching staff, NSU reached the Sweet 16 in 2004, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2006.
Beth Jillson (161-132) is in her 11th season at Texas Woman's and is its all-time winningest coach. Jillson has led the Pioneers to the program's only NCAA National Tournament appearances, 2010-11 and 2015-16, as well as the basketball's first LSC Championship in 2010-11.
Last time out for NSU
A monster third quarter by Northeastern State guided them to a 69-52 MIAA win on Saturday afternoon over Southwest Baptist. The RiverHawks outscored the Bearcats 24-7 in the third period and were dominating on the glass, out-rebounding SBU 50-to-31 behind a double-double effort by
Bailee Eldred. The NSU junior had a career afternoon with 12 rebounds, 12 points, along with six assists.
Last time out for TWU
KJ Stastny and a career game by Grace Mitchell propelled Texas Woman's to a 78-61 win over Texas-Permian Basin last Saturday afternoon inside UTPB Gym. Stastny posted 18 points to go along with a career-best eight rebounds and tied a career-high with seven assists for the Pioneers.
Rare trip South
Tuesday's contest will be NSU's first trip to Texas since 2011 New Year's Eve where they played a tournament at St. Mary's in Austin during the RiverHawks independent season.
