NSU drops home contest to UCO, 82-71

TAHLEQUAH – Trent Cantrell scored six big points off the bench for the RiverHawks late in the second half to threaten Central Oklahoma at the NSU Event Center on Tuesday evening but they would fall to their in-state rivals 82-71.

Cantrell had 13 points off the bench was the catalyst in an eight point swing in the final minutes of the contest.  Following his layup with 6:24 left, Northeastern State trailed Central Oklahoma 65-62.

Northeastern State could not close and Central Oklahoma hit their next four buckets to drop nine straight points and spin the RiverHawks to their fourth loss in a row.

"I'm proud of the way that we competed," said head coach Mark Downey.  "We didn't quite guard like I wanted them to tonight, they (UCO) just made some shots tonight, and they got some guys that can make some plays. When you turn it over 17 times and let them shoot 58-percent in the second half its going to be hard to beat a good team."

Cantrell joined three others who were in double-figures for NSU on Tuesday with Jamir Andrews having a 16 as a team high.   Josh Bougher had 12 and freshman Coryon Mason had ten, along with five rebounds and five assists.

The RiverHawks led for most of the first seven minutes of the contest but a nine minute dry spell allowed for UCO to go on a 18-2 run and take their largest lead of 14 (31-17) with four minutes left in the half.

In the second half, NSU would trim the Broncho lead down two a pair of possessions three times before their 8-0 run late in the game. 

Northeastern State finished the night with a slight 35-to-33 rebounding edge on UCO with Gordon Hill having seven. 

From the field, the Bronchos shot 52-percent (26-50) but went to the line 32 times where they had 24 points.  The RiverHawks were 41.9-percent (26-62) on their side of the court and had 14 shots on the free throw line.

The loss on Tuesday evening sends the RiverHawks to 3-6 and 0-3 in MIAA play, while Central Oklahoma goes to 7-2 and 2-1 in the MIAA.

The RiverHawks will return to action on Saturday to host Southwest Baptist at 3:30 p.m.
