The Series
Northeastern State leads the all-time series against Southwest Baptist 12-6.  Since MIAA membership, the Bearcats hold a 4-2 advantage in the series, and have won the last two contests in a row.

The Coaches
Mark Downey was introduced as NSU's tenth men's basketball coach on April 11, 2017 and carries a 207-109 overall head coaching record, with four NCAA Division II Tournament Appearances, and has been named Coach of the Year six times.  Downey comes to NSU after two seasons at Fort Wayne (NCAA DI) as the program's top assistant on the bench, and has helped the Mastodons to appearances in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) and the NIT, while going 44-23.  Prior to Fort Wayne, Downey spent the 2014-15 season at Bowling Green where they went 20-12, and he helped direct them into the second round of the CIT.

Clark Sheehy is in his fourth season on the Southwest Baptist bench, holding a 40-54 (19-42 MIAA) record while at SBU.  Sheehy holds a career coaching record of 222-154 across twelve seasons while coaching six different All-Americans and over 20 athletes that have moved on to play professional basketball.

Last Time Out for NSU
Trent Cantrell scored six big points off the bench for the RiverHawks late in the second half to threaten Central Oklahoma at the NSU Event Center on Tuesday evening but they would fall to their in-state rivals 82-71.  Cantrell had 13 points off the bench was the catalyst in an eight point swing in the final minutes of the contest.  Following his layup with 6:24 left, Northeastern State trailed Central Oklahoma 65-62.

Last Time Out for SBU
Southwest Baptist opened MIAA play with a loss Thursday at Central Oklahoma, 83-64, to fall back down to .500 through their first eight contests.  The Bearcats trailed from coast-to-coast and trailed as many as 24 points to the Bronchos.  Marlon Alcindor led the Bearcats in scoring with 16 points on 4-of 9-shooting.

A NSU win would…
  • End a four game skid.
  • Move them 13-6 all-time against Southwest Baptist.
  • First MIAA win of the season.
An SBU win would…
  • Be their third win in a row over the RiverHawks.
  • First road win of the season.
  • Move them to 5-2 against NSU in MIAA action.
Up next
The RiverHawks will be off until Dec. 19 where they will host Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m.
