NSU softball splits final day in Bentonville

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Northeastern State split their final day of the Eight-State Classic on Sunday beating Drury 5-3 and later falling 9-3 to East Central.

Paige Gann continued to swing a hot bat in the opener against DU (2-4) with a three RBI game on a double and home run.  Haley Acrey hit a pair of sac flies for two RBI to account for the rest of NSU's five runs.

The RiverHawks were up 3-0 on before Drury homered in the top of the fifth.  Gann responded back with a two-run bomb to center to get the RiverHawks up 5-1.  Drury countered in the next frame with a one-out two-run homer but would be stopped by Northeastern State.

Sylver Collins (5-1) picked up her fourth win of the week, with four strike outs in 5 1/3 innings of work.  Jennifer Wolf picked up her second save of the season and recorded the final five outs.

In the nightcap, NSU picked up an early two run lead on back-to-back RBI singles from Carlee Gann and Paige Gann in the second inning.  However, in the bottom frame, the Tigers (9-3) batted through their order for seven hits and plated five runs on the RiverHawks.  After a scoreless inning, a NSU error allowed for two more runs to come home and the RiverHawks found themselves down 7-2.

In the sixth, two more fielding errors for the RiverHawks tacked on to the East Central lead to 9-2 before Sierra Crick gave NSU their third run in the seventh.

Northeaster State had seven hits with Crick having three.  Taryn Gray (1-2) started the game for NSU and went three innings, Jennifer Wolf came in and tossed the final three.

Sunday's split sends the RiverHawks to 6-5 overall and they will be off until March 3 where they will host Missouri S&T for a doubleheader.
