CLAREMORE – Northeastern State surrendered an early three run lead and fell, 8-6, Tuesday afternoon at Rogers State.Â
Â
Jordan Payne homered for the third time this season and had a double in the loss. The RiverHawks bashed out 12 hits but were outdone by the Hillcats who had 17 and chipped away at the NSU lead scoring a run in the second through seventh innings.
Â
"We need to pitch better and got to put up zeros on the scoreboard," said head coach
Jake Hendrick. "They (Rogers State) put up runs from the second through seventh inning so when you pitch in that fashion it's going to be tough. They threw up more zeros than us late in the game and that really made the difference."
Â
"We came out hot swinging the bat and felt like it was going to be a game we were going to be in. We were in it to the end but that's baseball and it's a tough one to lose."
Â
Northeastern State scored in the first two innings on a RSU throwing error and
Michael Rhea doubled in a pair to go up 3-0 on the road. The Hillcats countered in bottom half of the second inning with a RBI double before Payne in the next frame hit the RSU scoreboard in left field to give NSU a 4-1 advantage.
Â
Rogers State (7-2) kept slowly eating at the three run NSU lead, scoring two in the third, and tying the game on a solo shot in the fourth. The Hillcats added two insurance runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to go up 7-4 on the RiverHawks.
Â
Chad Reibenspies chipped a run off of the RSU lead in the seventh on a RBI single but the Hillcats would take that run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Northeastern State threatened in the ninth with
Bryce Davenport raking a RBI single to put the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs. However, the NSU rally ended on a pop-up to stop the RiverHawks' three game winning streak.
Â
Five NSU pitchers would go on the mound for the RiverHawks, with
Daniel Faulk getting the starting nod, and going the first three innings.
Tyler Yancey (0-1) was Northeastern State's second pitcher out of the bullpen and was charged with the loss for tossing the fifth inning.
Â
The RiverHawks (5-3) will return home to open MIAA play for a three game series against Northwest Missouri State starting on Friday at 2 p.m.
