Long's career day not enough in 81-69 loss at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Cailyn Long carried the RiverHawks with a career afternoon but they would come short at Washburn falling 81-68 in NSU's season finale.

Long went off for 29 points, besting her previous mark by a pair on 9-for-17 shooting, and banking five treys on WU.  Mary Jane Buschmann added 12 points in her final game in a NSU uniform, and in two seasons she put up 528 points in 48 games played.   Alexis Hill scored ten with four assists for the RiverHawks; Rylie Torrey added eight points and brought her season total to 443.

Northeastern State led for the first three minutes and kept the game inside single digits until the final 60 seconds where WU scored seven unanswered to take a 37-25 lead into halftime.

The Washburn lead continued to widen in the second half and they were in front by 20 in third quarter.  NSU did put on a late rally in the fourth period and got within eight (71-63) with 2:58 left following a Long layup.   However, the Ichabods followed with an 8-0 run to halt the RiverHawks' momentum.

From the field, Northeastern State shot 43.1-percent (22-51), and Washburn went 56.6-percent (30-53) on their side of the floor.  The Ichabods out-rebounded NSU by ten with 31 boards, Miranda Griffin led Northeastern State with seven rebounds.  WU (17-11, 10-8 MIAA) had five in double figures with Jharian Bowen scoring a game high 21 points.

For the season the RiverHawks set a program record at the free-throw line going 76.6-percent (113-126) beating the 1991 record which was 75.7-percent.

Northeastern State concludes their season with a 6-21 record and 2-17 in MIAA play.
