Softball splits twin bill with Emporia State

TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State crushed four homers in game one to beat Emporia State 9-3 but later fell 14-0 in a lopsided nightcap on Tuesday afternoon at RiverHawks Park.

NSU's home run total in the opener was their most since the 2015 season and the split kept the RiverHawks one game above .500 at 16-15 overall and in MIAA play they are 5-3.

Northeastern State used the long ball to score early with Sierra Crick and Haley Acrey hitting two run shots to left field in the opening inning.   In the next frame, Kelsey Harmon put the RiverHawks up 6-0 on ESU with a home run to right center.

The Lady Hornets plated a run in the fourth with a solo shot to left before Carlee Gann hit her first career homer in the bottom half of the frame.

A run scoring double by ESU moved the contest to 7-2 but the RiverHawks plated two on a walk and wild pitch.  Emporia State hit their second homer of the game in the sixth to get to the 9-3 final score.

The RiverHawks had eight hits with Crick having a perfect game at the plate in three at-bats, with two RBI driven in; Jennifer Wolf (6-5) struck out five for the complete game win.

In the nightcap, the Lady Hornets stung first with three runs in the opening frame, and after a scoreless inning they went through the order with seven hits and seven runs to go up 10-0.

Emporia State (18-14, 4-2 MIAA) kept adding to their total in the fourth with four more runs crossing home plate.   The RiverHawks ended up being shutout with only two hits in the shortened five inning contest.  NSU used four pitchers with Taryn Gray (3-4) getting the loss.

Northeastern State will remain home and will host Missouri Western State on Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
