JOPLIN, Mo. –
Paige Gann homered twice on Sunday but the RiverHawks would drop both contests at the TMZ Invitational.  Northeastern State lost 7-4 in the morning to Drury and then had a rally come short in an 8-6 decision against Maryville.
The homers by Gann were her fifth in the last five games and has brought her season total to eight which tops the MIAA through this weekend's games.  Gann already owns the NSU softball record for career homers with 30 in her junior season.
In the early morning contest, the Panthers avenged a 5-3 loss earlier in the season at a tournament in Bentonville, Ark. with three runs in the third and fifth innings.  Gann hit her seventh homer of the season which handed NSU an early 1-0 lead in the second inning but it would be the RiverHawks' lone lead of the morning.
Haley Acrey hit a RBI double in the fourth, and then scored a second run on a sac fly in the sixth to put the score at 6-3.
The Panthers added their seventh run in the home half of the sixth on a double steal before
Jess Schuler hit her first career homer in the seventh.
Northeastern State used four pitchers with
Taryn Gray (1-3) starting and going four innings.
Jennifer Wolf,
Brittany Cagle, and
Mollie Carter all came in to record the final six outs.
Sierra Crick had two of NSU's six hits in the loss.
In the nightcap against Maryville, the RiverHawks had to dig themselves out of a six run hole after giving up runs in the first four innings.  Northeastern State would rally using the long ball with Crick hitting a two run shot and then Gann followed up with a solo home run in the fifth; Schuler added NSU's fourth run of inning on a single to get the score to 7-5.
Crick in the next frame got the RiverHawks within a run of Maryville before they picked up an insurance run in the seventh.
Sylver Collins (6-3) recorded the first four outs before Carter came in during the second to pitch the rest of the contest for NSU
The RiverHawks had 11 hits against Maryville with Crick having a three hit, three RBI game.
Northeastern State (7-10) will return to RiverHawks Park on Tuesday to open MIAA play with Washburn for a doubleheader starting at noon.
