TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State's hot start continued on Saturday with the largest win margin in two seasons beating Northwestern Oklahoma 7-0.
Saturday's offensive outburst was NSU's largest since an 8-1 win over Southwest Baptist during the 2015 season and mirrored the RiverHawks seven-point shutout of the Rangers (0-2) at the start of that season.
"We came out good right away, we scored and I thought our momentum was good," said sophomore defender
Emily Seiler. "We just kept going and scoring and it turned out really well for us today."
"Our defense lucked out on all the forwards, we were closing pressure, and had everything locked down. It's just game two for us and I feel like we still have improvements to do but for right now I feel like we are doing pretty well."
The RiverHawks were furious on the attack with 26 shots with 19 of them on goal.Â
Jessie Lynch landed a pair of breakaway goals on her former squad in the second half with one of them coming in the 45th minute and in the 89th. Lynch transferred to the RiverHawks for her senior season after playing for the Rangers in 2014 and was a First Team All-Conference selection.
Becca Gleason opened up NSU's outburst with a shot in front of the keeper in the 11th minute for her first goal of the season.Â
Mariah Nicolet followed up eight minutes later landing a shot left of the keeper near the far post to put the RiverHawks up a pair. The Rangers would accidentally kick into the own goal in the 36th minute to put them up three and
Emily Brown scored with just under a minute left to the half to give the RiverHawks a wide 4-0 lead.Â
Freshman
Paulina Chavez had her third career goal in the 67th minute as NSU's sixth goal.
Melissa Giles had eight of the RiverHawks 26 shots and which was the most for a NSU player since
Julia Mathis had ten at Southwest Baptist last season on Sept. 22, 2016.
The RiverHawks (2-0) will remain at home and will host Harding on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
