RiverHawks swat Hornets, 89-87

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Jamir Andrews and Josh Bougher both had 20-point games to pace Northeastern State (4-12, 1-7 MIAA) for an 89-87 road win at Emporia State (8-8, 3-4 MIAA) on Saturday evening.  The win halted a ten game skid for the RiverHawks who have had close calls in the new calendar year of turning their fortunes around.

Andrews had 26 points which was three points short of his career high that he set at Oklahoma Baptist; Bougher dropped in 21 for the RiverHawks and surpassed his career high by four.  NSU spread their offense around against the Hornets with five in double-figures. Coryon Mason had 13, Montre' Williams with 11, and Trent Cantrell scored ten off of the bench.

Emporia State who back-pedaled Central Oklahoma, 71-69 on Wednesday trailed Northeastern State for most of the second half, and looked to be running away with the game building up a 12-point twice on the Hornets.   Following a Lucas Antunez layup with 13:27 left to lead 57-45, the RiverHawks would nearly go eight minutes' in-between buckets.  During that span ESU went on 26-11 run and took a 71-68 advantage with 6:11 left.

Bougher carried the RiverHawks to the finish line and ended the dry spell with a three-pointer to tie contest at 71.  For over three minutes NSU went on a 12-3 run with Bougher netting ten points to pull ahead of the Hornets for the final time.

Northeastern State was limited to 41 shots but was 56.1-percent on the floor, from the arc they were 65-percent (13-20), which was their best effort since Dec. 6, 2014 where they shot a school record 87.5-percent (14-16) against Lindenwood.   The Hornets were 27-for-55 (49.1-percent) on their side of the floor and led 30-to-24 in rebounding.
