TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State shutout its fifth opponent in a row and closed out the regular season with a win 1-0 over Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon.
James Doyle scored the lone goal in the contest off a penalty kick in the first half to move the #18-ranked RiverHawks to 15-2-1 (5-2-1 MIAA) this season.
Sunday's defensive scoreless streak by NSU broke the MIAA mark of four straight shutouts that the RiverHawks set last season along with Fort Hays State in 2014.
Lindenwood, in their final MIAA contest, will see its season end at 9-6-3 (3-4-1 MIAA). The Lions will be moving to the GLVC following the academic year with the conference series with NSU will ending at 5-5-2.
Northeastern State does own the overall series mark at 7-6-2.
In the second half, the RiverHawks nearly iced the contest with its second goal in the 72nd minute from
Blake Dumond on a breakaway. A late offside call overruled the goal to keep the contest at 1-0.
Offensively the RiverHawks were unlucky on Sunday with plenty of good marks and ten shots on goal
Thomas Salenbien went to 9-1-1 this season with two saves for the shutout.
Odds all but certain that NSU will qualify as an at-large to the NCAA Tournament where they would travel to Fort Hays State to play in the Central Region Finals on Nov. 15 in Hays, Kan.
The NCAA Bracket will be released officially on Monday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m.
