Gann and Schuler Homer as RiverHawks Split

EMPORIA, KAN--- Northeastern State split a pair of games at the Emporia State Classic on Saturday. The -RiverHawks opened the day with a pair homers from Paige Gann and Jess Schuler in a 13-6 victory over the University of Illinois-Springfield.  The RiverHawks rallied from four runs down only to fall on a walk off double in the bottom of the seventh in a 5-4 loss to William Jewell.

Northeastern State in the opener jumped ahead on a Paige Gann two-run homer to left on the Prairie Stars.  After giving up a run in the bottom frame, Gann and Sierra Crink both had RBI to put the RiverHawks ahead 4-1.

The seesaw battle continued in the home half of the same inning with UIS getting a run on a NSU error and two runs on a RBI double to left to tie the game at 4-4 with the RiverHawks.

The even contest was short lived and Northeastern State leap back in front in the third inning plating a run on a sac fly and a Gann single.

Following a quiet fourth and fifth inning, the RiverHawks hung a three spot on the scoreboard in the sixth with Kelsey Harmon scoring a run on a RBI triple and Jessica Boone single.  Northeastern State's third run would come on an UIS outfield error.

Behind 9-4 to the RiverHawks, UIS trimmed the RiverHawks lead down to three with a two RBI double with no-outs.

In the seventh, NSU's bats once again came alive with ten hitters coming to the plate to score four runs to go in-front 13-6; Jess Schuler hit a two-run homer for a pair of RBI.

Gail Young (2-2) went 5 1/3 innings and struck out five batters. Sydney Balderrama came in during the sixth to record the final five outs.

In the night cap, William Jewell pelted NSU starter Sydney Balderrama for five hits and plated four runs in the opening frame that put the RiverHawks in an early hole 4-0.

Kyla Ibarra started the NSU comeback in the second inning with a one out double that plated two runs and cut the Cardinal lead in half at 4-2.

The RiverHawks plated another run in the third on a Schuler single and tied the game in the fifth inning on a Jessica Boone sacrifice fly to center.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the game headed to the seventh tied at 4-4.

In the final frame, NSU put two runners on base, but a pair of strike outs and infield fly shut down the RiverHawks seventh.  After six scoreless innings, William Jewell found the bats again in the seventh.

The Cardinals would score the victory in walk off fashion as Emily Hoover's double plated the winning run.

Balderrama went 6.1 innings allowing five runs and giving up eight hits to fall to 2-3 on the year.
