TAHLEQUAH –
Jamir Andrews set the floor on fire with 39 points but Northeastern State would see its season end in heartbreak to Washburn, 88-86 in overtime. Â
Northeastern State needed a win and a Missouri Western loss to qualify for the MIAA Tournament on Saturday. The RiverHawks were halfway there with Western falling 88-70 to Lindenwood with ten minutes remaining in Northeastern State's contest.
Â
Playing with the season essentially on the line, NSU ripped down a double-digit deficit, and finished regulation on a 19-7 run.  The RiverHawks dropped four three-pointers with Andrews and
Trent Cantrell both having eight.Â
Tanner Mouse had three during that span but it was his bucket from beyond the arc that tied the game at 76 and extended the season for five more minutes.
Free-throws kept Northeastern State in the game in overtime where they were 1-for-3 from the field. Washburn sent the RiverHawks up to the line three times for seven points. Trailing 87-86 with 17 seconds to go,
Montre' Williams picked up a critical steal to give NSU the ball. On its final possession, Northeastern State drove into right side of the post but the ball would be knocked out of the hands of Andrews who was trying to hit his second game winner of the week.Â
Being forced to foul, Northeastern State put Washburn up the line with two seconds remaining were they missed the back half of their shots at the free-throw line. Trailing 88-86, Northeastern State spent their final timeout and when play resumed, they couldn't get a shot off in time to end their season.
Andrews' scoring outburst was second highest this season in the MIAA and with nine three-pointers he was one short of tying a 23 year old Northeastern State record that was set by Jason Christie (vs. College of Ozarks on Nov. 10, 1995).
Cantrell and Mouse both had 13 points, while Williams in his final game had 12 with five assists to conclude his NSU career with 1,056 points.  Â
Andrews came to NSU with only one year of eligibility remaining and had 479 points, which was sixth most in a season in Northeastern State's NCAA Division II era.Â
Washburn goes to 20-8 (14-5 MIAA) while Northeastern State will see their season end with a 8-20 (4-15) record.
