TAHLEQUAH, OKLA. ----- Northeastern State turned 19 hits into 14 runs in capturing a wild 14-9 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State at a very windy Thomas C Rousey field here Tuesday.
The win moves the RiverHawks to 10-7 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 12-6.
On an afternoon where there was a sustained 30 mph NW wind with gusts to over 40, the RiverHawks took advantage of SWOSU pitching.Â
The top of the RiverHawks lineup went a combined 9-13 with seven RBI's and scored seven of the 14 NSU runs.
Erick Espinosa was 3-4,
Alex Massie was 3-5 with four RBI and
Jaxon Phipps was 3-4 with three RBI's.
SWOSU opened the scoring in the second inning using the only home run of the day for a 2-0 lead. NSU quickly erased that plating three runs in the bottom half of the frame to lead 3-2.Â
The Bulldogs quickly countered with four runs in the third inning to retake the lead 6-3 after three innings of play. SWOSU added another run in the fourth inning to lead 7-3.Â
NSU took control from this point on, scoring 11 runs in the next four innings combined to pull away. The RiverHawks plated four in the fourth inning, two in the fifth, three more in the sixth and two in the seventh to capture the 14-9 victory.
Trevor Smith started the game for the RiverHawks going 3.1 innings, striking out seven Bulldogs batters.Â
Nolan Sturgeon (1-0)came on in relief to throw 4.2 innings to pick up the win.
Northeastern State will return to MIAA play as it travels to Northwest Missouri State this weekend.
