RiverHawks Outslugs Fort Hays in Doubleheader Sweep

HAYS, KAN----  Northeastern State Reid Fehr and Michael Rhea both hit two home runs as the RiverHawks pick up the double header sweep of Fort Hays State in MIAA action at Larks Park here Thursday.  NSU took the opener 13-9, and followed with a 15-7 victory in the nightcap.

The RiverHawks improve to 21-16 and 12-12 on the year.

In the opener, the RiverHawks jumped out in front in the opening frame.  Tristan Ridenour's triple plated two runs and Jaxon Phipps followed with a RBI single.  Fort Hays State plated one in the bottom half for a 3-1 NSU lead.

Reid Fehr collected an RBI in the third on a fielder's choice for a 4-1 lead.

The Tigers captured the lead in the third with a pair of home runs for a 5-4 advantage.

The NSU bats came alive in the sixth inning.  Erick Espinosa led off with his fifth home run of the year to tie the game at 5-5.  Back to back singles from Zack Henderson and Ridenour set up Colton Wright's sixth home run of the year, a three run blast extending the lead to 8-5. The lead was extended to 10-5 on back to back home runs from Reid Fehr and Michael Rhea.

Henderson's fourth home run of the year to lead off the ninth inning led put the exclamation point on the victory as the RiverHawks plated three run to capture a 13-9 victory.

Dustin Berrong went three innings, with Lane Rice going the final six innings to pick up the victory.

Northeastern State pounded out 20 hits in route to a 15-7 win in the nightcap.  The RiverHawks capped off a banner day at the plate.  Rhea and Fehr went deep for the second time along with Ridenour to cap the home run tally at eight in the two games.

Henderson finished the evening going 8-12 (4-6, 4-6) with four RBI's.

NSU looked to run away with this one, scoring in each of the first five innings to lead 10-1 through four and half innings.  Fort Hays would plate six runs over the next two innings to cut the NSU lead to 10-7.  The RiverHawks shut the door on the Tigers rally with two in the eighth and three in the ninth to cap the 15-7 win.

James Cowell went six innings, striking out eight to pick up the victory, Trevor Smith went the final three innings to pick up his first save of the year.
